Abstract

Fixed expressions include idioms, collocations, proverbs and epigrams ( Moon 1998). A good command of a language hinges on the familiarity and the flexible use of its fixed expressions. Apart from the linguistic study of universal principles, the research of fixed expressions is indispensable to build a complete picture of a language ( Jackendoff 2002, Goldberg 2003). Based on the theoretical proposals of Nunberg et al. (1994) and Lien (2003a, 2003b, 2005) and Hsieh et al. (2005) and models of metaphor, the paper explores Mandarin and Taiwanese fixed expressions with main focus on the analysis and interpretation of the semantic properties and metaphoric use of animal expressions in idioms and proverbs.
